I thought they were probably exaggerating at the time but I'm inclined to agree. Someone described her as the writers making "best girl/waifu first and character second". She's like a deuterogonist but she doesn't really do anything until near the end of the game.

It's like they wanted to make a new protagonist ps3 style and didn't do it but kept all these extra details. In short, I wish she came off as an actual character. She doesn't have any meaningful interaction with anyone but Joker after all.
And she'll be in love with him at the end no matter what. All the other characters have more grounded backstories, and then there's Kasumi who's story is a lot more like an anime plot.Īnd of course one of Joker's only showtimes is with her and her thief outfit is pretty much a feminine version of his because they're destined to be together lol. She's pushed in all promotional materials and marketing but I think she lacks substance. Morgana insists you beg her to join the phantom thieves when she awakens. All the phantom thieves do when she's mentioned in a conversation. "Ugh that new girl is so thin and cute!!", "I heard she's an amazing athlete!!" "Did you know she's an honor student!" And any criticisms of her are clearly out of jealousy : "that nice girl bit is such an act!", "she thinks she's better than us" Morgana talks about how great she is.
Kasumi's is just entwined in the story throughout. But the thing is it pretty much stops when the next party member shows up if not earlier. Ann's beauty, Makoto's leadership/strategy (and I love her but I question that a bit lol), Futaba's intelligence (though I think that's offset by how awkward she is and everyone points it out), Haru's grace/maturity after Okumaru's palace. I mean every time a new party member, well the girls at least, is introduced there's some fawning. I do think I'd like her better if we could ever criticize her in-game like we can anyone else. I was waiting for the part where I do like her because everyone hypes her up so much so I thought it came later but no, apparently you're supposed to like her from the start lol
